1. Meet My Friend Frosty!

And, no…he’s not a snowman. Hello everyone, Monti here, the Jefferson’s Executive Canine Officer. I’m enjoying my last few weeks of summer at camp up here in Vermont before returning home to Washington, DC. I heard it’s been a beautiful summer in DC and I can’t wait for my first fall in the city!

You know who else would love to spend the fall exploring DC? Frosty!

He was clearly named for his fluffy white coat by the great people at PAW Rescue and is very friendly. His pastimes include, sitting on your lap, hugging and cuddling; such a charmer! Frosty was a stray, but now he is ready to put his traveling days behind him and settle down with a family.

Frosty needs a little training and would love a home that has had some dog experience who will guide him along, and give him lots of exercise. I have no doubt that Frosty would be a great addition to any home!

If you are interested in meeting my friend Frosty or any of my other furry friends, email PAW Resuce at pawdogs@yahoo.com

Enjoy the rest of your summer and I’ll see you back in DC soon!

  3. DC Cool is Here to Stay!

We already knew that DC was one of the coolest cities to live and to visit. From the Smithsonian museums to the small ever-growing neighborhoods around the city; there is always something going on in Washington, DC.

But now it’s official, we’re cool!

Earlier this week, our friends at Forbes declared that “Flooded with politicos and political junkies, Washington, DC, often comes off as a city steeped in raw ambition. But the nation’s capital deserves to be known for something else: coolness.” To read the article in its entirety, click here.

So, what is there to do this weekend in our very cool city? Who better to ask than DC Cool, the go-to arm of Destination DC for all things cool in our nation’s capital!

For a round up for what’s going on this weekend, check out what our good friends at DC Cool have put together. From a visit from Jerry Seinfeld to a viewing of Casino Royale at the drive-in at Union Market and a few awesome live music venues, there is something for everyone to do this weekend in Washington, DC!

So thanks for Destination DC and to Forbes for upping our cool factor! We think Jefferson would have agreed with you.

  4. Call Us Ishmael This Month!

One of the most recognizable opening lines in classic literature, Moby-Dick has been spotted at The Jefferson, DC in our ongoing Year of the Author program and we thought it would only be appropriate that we celebrate this work of Herman Melville beginning on August 1, Melville’s birthday!

The 6th book by Herman Melville, Moby-Dick tells the tale of Captain Ahab's voyage in pursuit of the elusive Moby-Dick. Published in 1851, the novel did not become popular until after Melville’s death in 1891. While Moby-Dick is one of the most recognizable works of literature today, when we asked our staff who had read this epic novel, not many of us had. Have you?

We celebrate this tale of man vs. sea in Quill this month with a cocktail comprised of Gin, Blood Orange, Vermouth and Aperol; the perfect cocktail to sip while sitting on our patio, overlooking 16th Street, celebrating what’s left of another DC summer.

So happy 195th Melville! We raise our glass to you today and all month long!

  5. Reporting Live from VerMonti!

    Hi friends!

I hope everyone is having a fantastic summer. As many of you know, I’m summering in Vermont and having a fabulous time! So far, I’ve visited the capital, which I think should be renamed “Monti”pellier and have gotten to know the locals.

But, I know I still have a job to do as the ECO at my very pet friendly hotel in Washington, DC so this week, I’d like to introduce you to Sochi!

    About Sweet Sochi

Sochi has been through a lot in his first three years. His owner chained him up and often usually forgot to feed him. A kind-hearted shelter worker saw him living outside, unprotected, when the polar vortex hit earlier this year and bought him a dog house but the owner left it just out of reach for poor Sochi to get inside to keep warm.

Finally, the owner gave him up, now blind, emaciated and with frostbite on his nose and ears. The local shelter got him treated, fed him and looked for a rescue to give Sochi a home. He is completely house broken and crate trained. He is remarkably calm and gentle and even though he no longer is able to see, he is incredibly smart and adapts to his surroundings quickly.

The ideal home for Sochi would be where he isn't alone. Another dog (or two) would be great but of course Sochi would prefer to be with his humans.

If you want to meet Sochi or any of my other friends from PAW Rescue contact the amazing people at PAW at pawdogs@yahoo.com.

Have a great weekend everyone! I’ll be eating ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s – I hope they have chicken ice cream!

  6. Something Amazing is Going on in DC

There are a number of great things that happen during the summer in Washington, DC. Screen on the Green, paddle boating on the Tidal Basin or just talking a walk through Rock Creek Park; there are so many outdoor activities to enjoy in our nation’s capital.

But DC gets hot. Like really hot. Like fry an egg on the sidewalk hot.

Our idea for getting cool this summer? Get lost in a maze at the National Building Museum! The Big Maze, open now through September 1, 2014 is located inside the Building Museum, just a short cab or metro ride away from The Jefferson, DC. At approximately 18 feet high and 60 feet by 60 feet, the maple plywood structure features a series of twists and turns for visitors to weave through and explore.

The National Building Museum is open seven days a week; Monday–Saturday: 10 am–5 pm and Sunday: 11 am–5 pm and the cost for admission is $8 for adults and $5 for youth, students and seniors.

So stay cool, Washington, DC and enjoy your summer!

  7. My Big Fish Must Be Somewhere

Happy July, Washington, DC! Continuing in our Year of the Author series, we spend this month with Ernest Hemingway, one of the most well known American writers of the 20th century. Hemingway is famous for works such as A Farewell to Arms, The Sun Also Rises and, of course, The Old Man and the Sea.

The Old Man and the Sea was published in 1952 and tells the tale of Santiago, an “unlucky” older fisherman has gone 84 days without catching a fish. On the 85th day, he heads out deep into the Gulf and catches a marlin, who becomes Santiago’s quest for three days, until he finally harpoons the marlin. The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953 and was cited by the Nobel Committee as contributing to the awarding of the Nobel Prize to Hemingway in 1954.

The Old Man and the Sea tells the tale of struggle, defeat and determination and is still widely read today. Have you read The Old Man and the Sea? Is it your favorite work by Hemingway? Let us know!

Haven’t read it? Drop by Quill and sip on our tribute to Hemingway, a cocktail comprised of Bacardi Rum, Simple Syrup, Lime Juice, Grapefruit Juice, Cherry Liquor and garnished with what else; a Swedish Fish!

    Have a great weekend everyone!

  8. Independence Day in our Nation’s Capital

We can’t believe it but next week is July 4th and there’s no better place to celebrate the long holiday weekend than in Washington, DC!

Have you planned your weekend in DC yet? We hope you’ll join us at The Jefferson for a few days of sightseeing with Where’s Tommy, fireworks and fun!

We bet you’ll be hungry on your adventures over the long weekend so why not let us help you out! Add a Jefferson Mobile Meal onto our summer package, ideal for when you’re on the go! The mobile meal includes a chef’s choice sandwich, Route 66 potato chips, a pasta salad, dessert made in house, a fruit cup and a drink and is $35 per person, tax included.

So now that we’ve got your snacks covered, here are some can’t miss events happening around town!

    Washington, DC’s Independence Day Parade
Washington, DC’s 4th of July Parade features marching bands, military and specialty units, floats and lots of VIP’s! This is a very popular event so we suggest planning to arrive early to get a good spot. The parade starts at 11:45 am and the route goes from 7th to 17th street along Constitution Ave.

    A Capitol Fourth Concert
A 4th of July tradition in the nation's capital includes a live concert by the National Symphony Orchestra and several pop artists performing patriotic music on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol Building. The concert is free and open to the public, no tickets needed! Admittance beings at 3pm and the concert kicks off at 8:00pm

4th of July Fireworks on the National Mall
Of course, no trip to DC for the 4th is complete without watching fireworks on the mall! The fireworks are launched from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool but can be seen from most vantage points on the mall. The show begins at sundown, usually around 8:30 pm.

We hope you all enjoy your weekend in Washington, DC and Happy 4th everyone!

  9. A Word From Monti

Monti here, happy Friday, folks! I asked the marketing department if it was ok for me to take over the blog this week to tell you about one of my friends from PAW Rescue that is in need of a home.

    Meet Beau!

This guy is about my age, and is super outgoing. He’s pretty laid back for a dog that has spent most of his life chained up in a backyard and eventually taken to the shelter. My friend Beau has some tricks up his sleeve as well; he knows, 'sit', 'down' and 'paw' -he's ambidextrous and will happily show you over and over for treats, a true lab 'chow' hound. He likes nothing better than to lie at a person's side and be petted; such a gentle giant. Beau lived with another one of my PAW friends,  Angie in his former life so he is good with other dogs but doesn’t really get along with cats.

My friend Beau is not such a fan of being at the kennel and is ready to meet his new family…is that you? I promise he would be a great addition to any home. Don’t believe me? Check out Beau in action on YouTube, playing in the pool!

If you are interested in meeting Beau, or for more information about him or any of the other wonderful PAW dogs, please send an email to pawdogs@yahoo.com

Thanks for listening guys and have a great weekend!
