  2. Giving Back This Summer

It’s been another intense week in the news and while we’re ready for this week to end, we look forward to the weekend for a number of reasons. Time to spend with loved ones, time to catch up on the week that’s just passed, or you can try spending your time with some people who could probably use an extra hand.

One of the great things about living in Washington, DC is that there is no shortage of amazing organizations that can always use some help. Here are a few around the city if you’d like to check them out!

    A Wider Circle

This organization, based in DC has one mission: to end poverty for one individual and one family after another. A Wider Circle helps those that may have fallen on some hard times but strive to get back on their feet. They offer a number of opportunities monthly to help those in your community. Check out their 2015 calendar can be viewed here.

    Martha’s Table

Whether you know it or not, food plays such an integral role in who we are and how we function on a day to day basis. Martha’s Table works to ensure that families in Washington, DC have access to and the proper education of food and are always looking for those that want to help out.

    Dog Tag Bakery

Maybe you don’t have time this weekend to devote a few hours, but we bet you have time to stop in to this Georgetown bakery and help support our veterans! The Dog Tag work-study program combines education with the experience necessary for vets to succeed post-duty as civilians. This program teaches them all aspects of running a successful business and all of the proceeds from their veteran-staffed bakery go toward the cause.

We hope everyone has a safe and restful weekend & that all the dads out there have an amazing Father’s Day!

  3. Monti's June Update

Hey folks, Monti here! I thought I would stage one last blog takeover before I head to Vermont for the summer. I hope you enjoy!

As any grateful rescue dog will tell you, it is important not to forget the kind people who have helped you along the way. That is why I love spreading the word about my friends at PAW Rescue and the fun-loving pups there looking for a home.

Today I would like to introduce you to two of the sweetest brothers east of the Mississippi, Butch and Sundance!

Butch and Sundance lived with a family for the first three years of their lives, until they found themselves back at a local shelter due to circumstances outside of their control. These pups don't have to be adopted together, though if you have room in your home and heart for both that would be icing on top of the cake.

Butch has the look of a collie but is much bigger and a real looker. He is quiet, well-behaved and peaceable. He is also friendly and affectionate and clearly enjoys being made a fuss of.

Sundance looks less collie-like than his brother – and in certain lights has the look of a small Bernese mountain dog. Like his brother he is absolutely gorgeous. He is quiet, well-behaved and affectionate with people and other dogs.

Aren’t they just best? If you are interested in meeting Butch and Sundance, or would like more information please contact PAW at pawdogs@yahoo.com.

I hope you’ll follow me on Instagram this summer to see what kind of trouble I get into in Vermont. I’ll be using #TuesdaysWithMonti & #VerMonti all summer long!

  7. Monti's May Update!

Hello friends, I hope you’ve all had a wonderful week! I know I have – our Director of Finance left some food in his garbage can and I immediately found it and had a delicious snack. I’ve now learned that almost everyone in the office keeps snacks in the garbage!

As you all know, when I’m not looking for snacks, I like to introduce you to some of my friends from PAW Rescue, and today I’d like you to meet Buck! He’s super cheerful and always seems to be smiling. They aren’t quite sure what breed Buck is but he definitely has a little beagle in him (we can spot our own) but also maybe spaniel, cattle dog; basically he’s an everything beagle! (get it, everything beagle, ha!)

He’s pretty new at PAW so everyone is still getting to know him but if you’d like to meet him or any of the other dogs at PAW, please email them at pawdogs@yahoo.com.

Also, I was told to remind you that there’s still time left to vote for my place of employment, The Jefferson in Conde Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice survey. We hope you’ll consider nominating The Jefferson this year!

  8. Things to do in DC this Weekend

One of the best things about spending the weekend in Washington, DC is that there is no shortage of great things to do! Here are some “can’t miss” events this weekend!

    Look Up in the Sky!

Today marks the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, and DC is getting a historic flyover that cannot be missed! One of the most diverse arrays of World War II aircraft ever assembled will fly above the national mall in part of a three-day celebration that will coincide with a ceremony for veterans at the World War II Memorial.

The flyover will honor the heroes who fought in the War and those on the home front who produced the tanks, ships, and aircraft that enabled the United States and its Allies to end the war.  The Smithsonian will host special events and activities in honor of VE Day. The flyover will start at the airspace over the WWII Memorial at approximately 12:10 p.m. and will fly from north to south for approximately 40 minutes. The best place to watch will be from anywhere along the national Mall from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument.

    Around the World in DC

Passport DC is DC’s an annual celebration of international culture presented by Cultural Tourism DC and allows visitors to visit the many embassies and cultural organizations around the city. On May 9th from 10 - 4pm the embassies of the European Union will open their doors to the public.

  10. Is Pippa Your Next Pooch?

And now, a note from our resident beagle, Monti!

Hi everyone & happy weekend! Hope everyone has been having a great spring and got a chance to visit those Cherry Blossoms; they certainly were beautiful and now I’m ready for summer!

You know who else is ready for summer – Pippa! Just look at those ears! My friend Pippa the terrier is just a puppy; the good people at PAW Rescue think she’s about six months old and will probably end up being between 40 and 45 lbs when she’s all finished growing.

Pippa needs an active family who love to take her on long walks or let her run around in a fenced yard. She’s been staying with one of the foster families from PAW and they said she gets along well with other dogs and cats and seems to be housetrained. She’s also super smart.

Summer is a great time to bring a dog into the family since you’ll be around more to help get them acclimated to their new home.

If you are interested in meeting Pippa, or for more information about her or any of the other PAW dogs, contact us at pawdogs@yahoo.com. I give them all my paw of approval!

I hope you’ll all get a chance to come and visit this spring and I look forward to welcoming you to my office, The Jefferson.
